Jackson County Genealogical Society

A Tribute to Samantha Bumgarner

presented by

The Deitz Family

A Musical Tribute to Samantha Bumgarner is the Jackson County Genealogical Society’s July Program.

Bumgarner was one of the first people to be recorded “on wax” playing the five-string banjo, performed at Bascom Lamar Lunsford’s inaugural Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, and traveled west with young fiddler Harry Cagle to play on Dr. John Brinkley’s infamous XERA radio station.

Mountain Heritage Award winners, The Deitz Family's music “flows easily from bluegrass to country to old-time fiddle tunes”. WCU’s Ted Coyle comments on their style, “(They play) the music that gets us off of our couches and down to our church or community center, where we once again come face-to-face with the people who make this place special.”

And speaking of “place”, Samantha Bumgarner, The Deitz Family, Harry Cagle, and Dr. John Brinkley are all Jackson County natives.

This event will be in the Community Room in the courthouse wing of the Jackson County Public Library on Thursday, July 14. The program will start at 7 pm. All JCGS events are free of charge and the public is welcome. For more information visit us on Facebook or call 631-2646 or e-mail jacksongenealogy@dnet.net
