Jackson County Genealogical Society

The Scotts Creek Store Ledgers of William Holland Thomas (years 1832 to 1855.)

Presented by

Jason Gregory

Jason is one of the society's most active and most valuable members.  He loves to research and seems to have a knack for finding material that no one else has found.  Such is true with these store ledgers.  On a trip to Raleigh, he made a visit the Special Collections at Duke University and was able to make copies of the ledgers from 1832 to 1855.  Many of the oldest families in the present day Jackson and Swain are found in these ledgers, buying everything from buttons to brandy.  The name of the purchaseer and the items and dollar amount are also given. In some cases the name of the purchaser is given with a note of his father's name beside his name.  The ledgers are fascinating to read.  But the until now the only way to view them was during a visit to Duke.  Jason's program will cover the ledgers, things he has found in them.  Come and hear the incredible story of these ledgers and how fortunate we are that a person or persons saw fit to preserve them.

The program will be in the Community Room (upstairs in the courthouse wing of Jackson County Library) on Thursday, May 12th. Refreshments will be served and JCGS activities will be discussed beginning at 6:30 followed by the program starting at 7 pm. All JCGS events are free of charge and the public is welcome. For more information call 631-2646.
